Affordable, tasty, and the pates are relatively low in carbohydrates
I'm a veterinarian and over the years have had many special needs cats (or ones that grew into that when older). My big concerns are preventing obesity, and treating/preventing diabetes. The Little Friskies wet pates have worked well in that regard. Our most recent addition was Mushi, a calico that at 15# looked like an engorged tick. She was allowed to free feed on dry kibble. She's now 8.9# with a body condition score of 3/5 and can easily jump up to the counter now when my back is turned. My feeding plan is simple: Refrigerate the cans before opening. This makes portioning easier as the food is firm. Each cat gets 1/3 of a can twice a day. I use a side-cutting opener instead of the pull tab as I can then use the lid as a cover for the portion I don't use. Now that we have three cats I no longer need to do that as we use a full can for each meal. The oldest cats are also getting calcitriol (Vitamin D3) dosed at 9 ng/Kg twice a week. In my experience this slows the progression of kidney insufficiency that is the destiny of all older cats. As I tell my clients, "All cats will develop some degree of chronic renal failure. What we strive to do is have them die at an old age WITH it, rather than earlier FROM it."
