This NAS saved my life.
I don't fear many people or things. But there is that moment in every married mans life when he realizes his wife would not hesitate to murder him in his sleep. Yeah. I realized this recently. I realized it when my wife told me "If 'we' ever lost all our kids and wedding photos and videos, I'll murder you in your sleep." (Obviously by "we" she meant, me.) See, preventing this is not as simple as many people think. You can lie to yourself and say that backup hard drive will survive forever, and that clicking sound it's making is it's way of telling you "Hello!". Or that those 500 CD's/DVD's you back up to will survive your house burning down. I mean, sure, you're wife will totally understand that.. right? right? I unfortunately don't feel my wife would be that understanding, which is why I needed a way that would easily store our digital memories not only reliably on site, but also somewhere offsite as well. I have been researching devices and drive for a while now, but I always seemed to end up reading about Synology. It's was tough finding the right device for me, since so many reviews focus around read/write speed, hardware compatibility, and feature sets that are more focused on 'small business' or 'shadetree image/video editors' .. and not based around "Best Device to store your summer vacation 2013" or "Best device for Disney memories" ... All I needed was something that was priced right, easy to use, and will back up the face off my data.. And ultimately, keep my wife from murdering me in my sleep... So, lets see how the Synology did: Priced Right: - Yup. Yup! This one is priced perfectly! Easy to use: - Drive installation is a piece of cake. I was really hoping I would have to break out my air tools or the dremel to man up the project a bit.. But all it takes is a philips head screw driver, and common sense. - Setup and network install were a breeze. I was hoping I would have to spend 2-3 hours on the phone with tech support reinstalling NETBios and re-terminating BNC cables... but no luck. The wizard took all the fun out of it. - Time from box to backup? Possibly 30mins? There was barely enough time for me to finish my 2nd beer. Whats the point of working on the weekend if you can't get hammered? Backs the face off of my data: - Default set up is to mirror the 2 drives locally. Perfect! Redundancy is Redundant! - 3 Clicks in the admin interface later I had Amazon Glacier service set up. Now, every night a backup of my data is sent to the Amazon Glacier product. Holla! Cloud redundancy is even redundantcier. BONUS Bells and Whistles: Yeah. This guy has it. The interface on it is awesome. There is a ton of fun things built into the device that any Interweb hobbiest will enjoy. Don't lie to yourself, this device is just candy coated Linux, but the engineers did such a great job with the interface, and the feature implementations that really makes it useable by anyone. Oh, and as far as Read/Write speed goes. It does it faster than the WiFi in your house, or faster than you can read/write to an SD card .. So most people's networks read/write is a non issue. So, have I been murdered in my sleep? - Nope. Not yet. I'll report back if it happens, but as of right now I'm still alive and kicking. And because of this, I personally would like to thank all the digital penguins that store and watch my data on the Amazon Glacier (Which is weird, you'd think a glacier would melt in the Amazon). And, I'd also like to thank the dude Ray D. who copies my data twice every time I ask him too. And I'd like to thank everyone at Synology for finally making a networking product that was thought out really well.
