A must read
Wow, just wow! This is my third book read for 2023 and it did not disappoint! As with many people, I am fascinated with the Royal family in England, I mean, who isn’t, amiright? I adored his mum. Diana was so beautiful, I always felt, too beautiful for even Charles. But her beauty was also extended outwardly with her charitable causes. So when I was watching the news on August 17, 1997 and heard of her passing and how she passed away, my heart broke. It broke for the people in England, but most of all for her two boys. William, a full teen and Harry at 12 losing a mum is never easy especially during your formidable teen years. I always had a soft spot for Harry. Even when he did stupid things, like wearing a costume he should not have, but later apologized, or got picture taken in Vegas, naked, I knew there was more to the story. I also love his charitable ways, just like him mum, especially dealing with Veterans. Like many, I was fascinated and intrigued when he started dating Meghan Markle. I had hoped and prayed that England, famous for their tabloids, would just let him be, let him live his life, be in love. But as with all click bait, etc. we saw that was not the case. I really, really felt bad for both of them. Then I start hearing the stories, backlash, etc. I even saw the Oprah interview and felt there had to be more, he just wanted to be heard. Moving forward, marriage, babies, a worldwide pandemic, his Granny (Queen Elizabeth) passing away, and other situations, Prince Harry just put his whole life out there because again, he just wants to be HEARD. This memoir is broken up into three parts: the death of his mother, his enlistment into the British Army and finally, meeting the love of his life. Prince Harry takes us into all three journeys in a unique way and perspective. For so long, he felt his mother was in “hiding” and eventually would come back for his and his brother. From a young age, he has dealt with the media, I mean, he’s a Royal, right? When he finds out how his mother had died, it became an obsession for him to bring down the tabloids and the paps. Reading the first part of this memoir, really and truthfully broke my heart for this young man. The second part, the Army: the trials and tribulations of boot camp, him going to Iraq and then being pulled out of it because of the freaky paparazzi and he was becoming an actual target to the insurgents. Harry felt most useful and protected being inside the front lines, isn’t that crazy? Just to get away from the lies being written and getting away from the crazy paps. He begged to back in some capacity. So off to airplane school he went to become an Apache pilot. Again, then reading this second part, all that he endured, and the mishaps that occurred, made me teary eyed. The final part, finding and meeting his soulmate. Reading it from his POV was breathtaking. How he fell in love and wanted to protect Meghan. All the horrible things the British tabloids was writing about his soon-to-be-wife, it was so ugly. It is still so ugly. The struggle trying to have his family back him up, help him and his new wife, went unanswered. Again, this part really and truthfully brought me to many more tears. I know many people are criticizing the fact that he wrote this memoir, that his has essentially broken off all protocol for publicizing, or rather, airing the Royal dirty laundry. The best one that I see going around is, if someone like him wants privacy, how and why is he writing about his life? Well here’s the thing, his life was never private. As they say, the Royals belong to the people (or the people of England). Yet, here is the thing, neither he nor his brother asked to be born into Royalty, right? He did seek therapy (at the suggestion of his older brother, nonetheless), but when he asked his family to intervene and help him get these “reporters” off his back, they turned their back, and continue to do so. They (the Royals) typical of families that do not like confrontation, will rather “sweep things under the rug” than rather stand up for their family member, one begging for help. These are my opinions, and anyone reading this review may not agree, or would rather just blame Harry and Meghan and how dare they speak up for themselves, for anyone to hear their truths. Whether you may want to read this book or not, no one should judge anyone for speaking up about their mental health. So what he is Royalty or rather, comes from the Royal family, that these situations should remain private. Yet they (his family), did not, it may not have them spreading gossip, but their circle of minions did. I hope and pray that Harry will get closure for sharing such private, intimate details of his life. But also, I hope it was therapeutic for him as well. I will say this, that I do not know if living in L.A. would be any better, but so far, it might be better than say, in his own country.
