Great Results, Even Without Being Skilled at Doing Hair!
There is definitely a learning curve with this product. The first time you use it, you'll definitely get your hair stuck in it, despite the fact that the product says "guaranteed no tangles." You need to practice using this tool, and each time you'll become better and faster at it.
I have always had the kind of hair that no matter how much heat, styling, gel, or spray I use, my curls are falling out while I'm in the car on my way to the event. I was very skeptical about using the curl secret because I have never found anything that worked for me. I tried "curling" shampoos and conditioners that "help your hair retain curls or styling better," hot rollers, foam rollers, curling irons, etc. etc.
In addition to my hair losing its style, I have never really been "good" at doing hair. Growing up when girlfriends asked me to do their hair I would groan because I didn't even know how to do my own hair. It's no surprise that at nearly 30, I still can't do my hair ;-) Some days, even mastering a pony tail is a struggle!
The Curl Secret looked so easy to use. I heard about how it was "different" because it heats your hair on all sides and retains your style better, so I decided to try it out. The first time I used it was ok - it took forever, I didn't have a lot of volume on top of my head, and boy did I get my hair tangled in it. You cannot put strands of hair wider than 1/2"- maybe 1" wide in the tool. When using this tool against your scalp, the more fanned-out your hair is at the top near your scalp, the more likely the tool is to get stuck and rip your hair out. I have learned a few tricks to using this tool that seem to make it better and easier for me, and each time I use it I get faster. I'm sure that this would be even easier and faster if you had someone to help you out!
When using this tool, I do my hair in "tiers." First I part the lower 1/4 of my hair with a comb and clip the rest to the top my head. Then I work my way around the half-circle of my neck/lower scalp using about 1/2" - 1" sections, keeping the sections parted "vertically" rather than fanned out horizontally (if that makes sense). Continue curling hair "in tiers," using a comb to create the next part and clip the other "tiers" to the top of the head. Working though each "tier" is another system of smaller pins and clips until each "tier" or "level" is curled. Finally, I end with the top of my head, which helps to achieve more volume. Maybe this "trick" isn't a secret, but as someone who is terrible at doing hair, I thought it was a revelation!
Be sure when you open the tool and release your hair that you don't "drag" the iron down your hair. That is, be sure to open the tool and kind of "dump" the curl out of the barrel. This will keep you from using the tool like a straighening iron. I found the first few times I used this, I was pulling the tool down the curls and straightening them out a bit and losing some curl. The curl needs a few seconds to set.
I don't use any product or sprays to get the curls to stay, which AMAZES ME, because again, I have always been the type to lose my hairstyle before I even get to an event. It is shocking to come home from an event hours later and have my curls intact, especially without use of any styling sprays or products. I have even gone to bed and woken up with my hair still curly (albeit sloppy bed-head curls). I don't know what that other person was talking about being disappointed that their curls last "only" 2 days - this isn't a PERM, it's a daily styling tool.
I attached some picture of my hair after using this product because sometimes seeing is believing (assuming Amazon approved and posted the images I shared). I get tons of compliments when I curl my hair with the Curl Secret. It's no secret that I'm not very skilled with my hair, so it's always awesome to be able to respond, "thank you! Why YES, I DID do my hair myself!" :-)
Please feel free to ask any questions and I will do my best to answer them as best as I can!
