Excellent cargo trailer, cheap wheels
I’ve been looking for a shopping trailer, and have settled for the Schwinn DayTripper. You simply can’t beat the weight/price ratio, and I’ve looked long and far. Delivery was swift, no excessive packaging. I got it assembled and fully figured out within a few minutes without even looking into the manual (which upon later study describes everything very well). It’s pretty much self explanatory. Overall, it’s a lovely trailer. Well built and sturdy, the folding frame snaps into place, the brace arms lock right into their ports. Its cover with rubber band borders and plastic buckles will stay in place and keep things dry during a minor rain and the road’s dust and dirt off your cargo, but it won’t withstand a veritabe downpour, especially with heavy splashes from the road since the cover leaves holes on the side. The plastic floor is definitely stable enough even for heavier loads, the hitch feels super sturdy. All in all it seems like this thing can carry more weight than I can be bothered to pull. So far the heaviest I’ve loaded up was a 4-drawer metal filing cabinet (there goes my warranty). I kid you not, pic attached. It folds quickly into something rather flat that can get tucked away even in a small apartment, and that in seconds. In another half a minute the wheels are off and it’ll be even flatter. Which brings me to the only downside: the wheels. Clearly cheap knockoffs, they came with a few issues. The tires are directional and one came mounted the wrong way. Not that that matters hugely, but i decided to be anal and change it. That revealed that the rim rubber that’s supposed to protect the inner tube from the spoke nuts was shifted and frankly not big enough, it didn’t cover all the rivets. A quick fix with some good tape, but hadn’t I changed the tire I probably would’ve run into a puncture pretty soon. Needless to say I checked the other tire as well and found the same problem. But more importantly, the rims were severely bent, making for a rather wobbly ride. Not just a slight warp, mind, they were seriously deformed. I had to take my pry bar and truing tool to the rims to straighten them. Once that was fixed it’s an astonishingly stable trailer, especially with a little load in it. Sticks to the road, doesn’t bounce too much, doesn’t give, doesn’t pull. I liked that the lock pins for the wheel mounts come tethered to the frame so you can’t lose them, however the one for the hitch is not, so i fashioned a tether out of a piece of string. The orange safety flag came off on the first ride, it just slides onto the pole. I've replaced it with something fun and secured it with a cable tie. As I said, all in all I really like this trailer and use the heck out of it. The wheels are probably the reason why we’re getting this good a quality for this low a price. If Schwinn is listening, however: a truly lovely trailer, but pretty please do something about those wheels.
