MUST HAVE for Pureed Baby Food!
I taught myself to make baby food in quarantine and these containers are great/essential! You can’t “wing it” when feeding a baby homemade solids, you need a system and to use the freezer as your stockpile. I thought I could just do fresh, not frozen- but thats a huge waste of food and in fact, NOT fresh considering that you need to purée a large enough quantity for the blender to work- and it’s an amount the baby cant eat within 3 days. Also, popping food from the freezer to the fridge to defrost for a day keeps you on top of what you have and what you need to restock. I converted to freezing quickly! The trays are so key to keeping it all together. Who wants to dig around and have the baby food mixed in with everything...these sets are worth the money just for that alone. And they stack so nicely, they really save room. I started with 2 trays in the freezer, one for meats and one for veggies (meats are more labor intensive and I coordinate making them with when I cook adult food, so I wanted to see them at a glance). Then I realized that I like to have a tray in the fridge, too. So easy to quickly grab and use to put together a meal on a plate for the microwave! So, I highly recommend 3 sets- straight out of the gate. Pricey but sooo worth it. They’re a stress-saver. About the seal coming out of the lid- yes it’s happened once in 3 months. Not a biggy to pop it back in there. If you’re doing this for the first time, here are my cliff notes: For meats: 1 cup meat, 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup carb (rice or potato, whatever you have from adult food cooking- although I avoid wheat). Use a regular blender (no need for baby specific ones) and blend only the water and carb first. Then, use the top feeder (or open lid) to very gradually add in the meat (which should be chopped into the smallest cubes you can). Do it in about 1 Tbs. batches, and give the blender time in between. Pay attention to the movement of the blades- they should move smoothly and not get stuck. You may need to not add a full cup of meat if the blades start slowing and skipping. I learned this the hard way by dumping in half a chicken breast with the water and rice from the beginning. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Don’t do that. Veggies are easier. Carrots and squash don’t need a blender at all. They can be smashed with the back of a fork after reheating. I still like freezing them because they are more fresh that way (not lingering in the fridge, I mean) and I dont have to cook them so often. Green beans: 2 cups cooked green beans to 1/2 cup water. I think that ratio can work for similar vegetables too. 3-4 rounds of blending gradually work fine. Super easy. If you’re still reading, carrots need to be chopped into slices and boiled for 30 min. For squash, check out baking it on youtube. I never ate squash but it’s good baby food. Stores well and easy to keep as a basic. My pediatrician stressed the role of protein in every meal- so just throwing that in there. A basic meal for us is a protein, 2 veg, some avocado and some fruit pieces. 1/4 cup total per meal at 9 months... so that’s why you need these Oxo cups! Bigger containers just waste the food, and no one with a baby has time to waste! Thanks for reading! If you found this helpful, please click that it was helpful, because it makes me happy! And because my 10 month old is now chewing my toe waiting for me to finish! Happy baby feeding!
