Want a durable Hiking Shoe that is made for folks who have WIDE feet? Look no more, the Merrell Moab Ventilator is for you
Just to start off, I've been buying Merrell Moab Ventilator's since 2010 and absolutely love them. Myself and my wife are regular hikers and these shoes have been with me through so many adventures. From the deserts, mountains, swamps, rivers, through a good portion of the Sierras and many tropical storms...my Moab has almost seen it all. I love these shoes. It's hard for me to buy good hiking shoes due to my feet. I have flat and wide feet and the majority of Hiking Shoe companies DO NOT make anything for people who have flat/wide feet. Before you mention any other name brand shoes...I have tried them all. I have spent time and money on hiking shoes that cost $30.00 to $200.00 and none of them were comfortable. Trust me, I've attempted many times to replace my Moab's with some other shoe that looks cool and has an extra feature of this and that, but I always come back to it. You just can't go wrong with the Moab's. Materials used were fantastic. I've never had any issues with stitching coming off or any of the Vibram falling apart. I actually still have my very first Moab and it currently sits in my closet. The shoe strings are great, I don't think I've ever really had to retie them during a hike. They don't come off easily and stay really secure. The Moab breathes pretty good which was a big surprise for me. I've worn them through many desert hikes and never had an issue of my feet not being able to breath. The shoe even dries okay from the inside, we've been through a few tropical storms and the Moab's typically dry faster than most hiking shoes that we've worn. I also love the rubber toe protector, it has saved my toes many times. The Vibram was probably the best thing ever and have lasted longer than the shoe itself. Vibram gripping was great, no slippages on rocky/wet terrain and it has held really well considering the abuse we put the shoes through. I typically get about 700-800 miles out of one pair of shoes which is great. Break-in time is quick and it takes me about 1 month to really break them in. Although I love this shoe, it does have some downfall's that I am willing to take. It is heavy and weighs a bit over 1.5 pounds depending on which size you choose. It's something that most folks who have never worn hiking shoes need to consider. The insert sole's are also very bad. It sucks when you spend over 60-90 buck's on a shoe and the soles it came with will only last about 2-3 months until you need to replace it. The insert soles tend to lose it cushioning aspect and it hurts to replace them after 2-3 months considering the cost of the shoe. MERRELL, if you are reading this...make durable soles, look at Superfeet. Give me something like that with the shoe. I'll gladly pay a bit more if it comes with some type of Superfeet designed insert sole. Pro's: 1. WIDE Shoe Size Options 2. Durable, I get about 700-800 miles per shoe. I purposely abuse these shoes and have never had any of them break or tear on me. 3. Vibram sole 4. Breathable and dries quicker than most hiking shoes that I've used 5. Very comfortable after break in 6. Good stitching Con's: 1. A bit on the heavy side (small con) 2. Insert Sole's break down after 2-3 months of usage, please fix this, considering the cost of a shoe that ranges from 60-90 bucks we should have better insert soles that come with it. (taking off 1 star for this) Overall, the Merrell Moab Ventilators have been fantastic for us. I have always recommended them to folks who are looking for wide hiking shoes and the cost is decent if you find them on sale.
