I'm a professional Illustrator, and these pencils are amazing for blending.
The pigment cores of the pencils are soft and perfect for mixing colors together. Because of their softness I wouldn't recommend them for precision/detail drawing since the pigment tend to smear. The point of the pencil doesn't stay sharp because it isn't hard enough and crumbles away. But that isn't what they are meant for.
If you want something for both blending and precision work I suggest Standford's Prismacolor Premier Soft Core Colored Pencils, I have the 132 set, they blend pretty well but not as well as these Derwent Colorsoft. On the other hand I can make cleaner and detail oriented drawings with them.
If you want the ultimate for small meticulous detailed work then I suggest Faber-Castell's Colour Pencil Polychromos. They're thin, hard, smear proof, oil based pencils for the ultimate clean and bold lines. Standford has the Prismacolor Verithin Colored Pencils but I find them inferior to the Faber-Castell's Polychromos and also the Prismacolor Verithins only comes in a set of 24 I believe, which strange since with hard lead pencils you cannot blend colors easily and therefore cannot created new colors by smearing them together, you would think they would offer more choices like Faber-Castell's 120 Polychromos.
The downside to any of these sets is that the metal case isn't the best for carrying around. Kind of annoying if you want to reach the second row of pencils as well. I keep an elastic around the tin to keep it from opening in my bag, but I would recommend putting them in a different case altogether.
ANYWAYS. To long didn't read:
[Pros]:
-Amazing blending
-Good number of colors
-Thick and soft cores.
-Sturdy pencils.
-Beautiful colors.
[Cons]:
-Bad for detail work.
-Case is a little weird and not handy for traveling with.
Bottom line is would I recommend these to someone serious about their coloring? Yes hands down yes.
