A great meter IFF...
If you test multiple times a day, belong to one of the HMOs that have partners with DARIO, and don’t have an Otterbox or similar bulky phone cover, then this meter is perfect! If you do have an otterbox or equivalent phone case then you’ll need a lightning port extender. In which case I suggest investing in a small pillbox to carry the extender and a few spare lancets (pictured), and you still have the convenience of a meter that fits in your pocket. The form-factor of this meter is its greatest asset. However, if your HMO is not one of the very few listed, then your cost for supplies will be about 10x your normal co-pay. Dario may offer some discounts to people in this category, but cost is still in the 10x range. They admit to being a health-care company, so they are not in the business of giving strips away. I also found that while my Pharmacy could “see” the Dario supplies on their order system, when they tried to order the strips they were unable to do so ( my mistake was to order the meter based on the belief that my pharmacy could order the supplies). You will need to buy the supplies from Dario only. After some research I found a Bluetooth meter, with a slightly larger form factor, that has the same functionality overall, i.e., using a phone app to track and manage my blood sugar, and supplies carried by my pharmacy where my cost will be 3 cents per strip (after insurance) vs about 30 cents per strip (without insurance) for the Dario. I’m keeping the meter in hopes that I can get Dario supplies covered by insurance in the future.
