Best protection against a dead car battery!!!
I’m an Electronics Engineer with 49 years of industry experience. Before purchasing this device, I reviewed a number of similar makes and models from various manufacturers. However, I was particularly interested in this “CAT” unit because of Caterpillar’s remarkable world-wide reputation. Upon reading various reviews, and after carefully studying a downloaded copy of the CAT documentation, I came to the easy conclusion that virtually all negative reviews resulted from users NOT following CAT’s simple instructions. In other words, those users had substantially misused the product. One individual, for example, had used their CAT Power Station in an emergency, then stored it for a couple of months, and then attempted to use it again afterwards in a new emergency; apparently never recharging the unit between uses. The manual clearly states that even if unused, the power station must be recharged every month. And after every heavy usage, a full recharge is necessary. All similar devices require the same level of attention no matter who the manufacturer is. The reason for this is exactly the same reason your own car battery needs constant recharging from the vehicle’s alternator. Why? It’s because ALL lead-acid batteries self-discharge, even when not used. The Cat Power Station, which features amazing performance, is extremely well designed and well made. Everything works exactly as advertised. The most important issue is, of course, the unit’s ability to jump-start a vehicle and afterwards have enough reserve energy to do it again----maybe even several times. To vigorously test my own CAT Power Station, I disconnected my car's battery from the vehicle and then jump-started the car. This, I figured, was the harshest test I could give the CAT. That's because, with the vehicle’s battery essentially removed, there could be no "boost" from it during my tests. In other words, every bit of power needed for starting the car would have to come from the battery in the CAT. (By the way, the vehicle I used for my tests was a 2011 Toyota Camry with a 270 horsepower V6 engine.) During the test, I jump-started the car ten separate times within a 5-minute period. In fact, jump-start number 10 appeared to be just as energetic/powerful as jump-start number 1. In other words, this power station was powerful enough to have jump-started at least ten vehicles of an engine size I just described, all with completely dead batteries. I am extremely impressed with this device, which utilizes a powerful lead-acid motorcycle battery.
