Almost makes mopping fun.
I have not had any trouble spinning the mop very dry and wonder whether some bucket systems may be slightly misaligned -- which could explain complaints about how well it works overall and the noise generated when spinning the mop dry. My favorite complaint amongst those reviewers who complained was that the spinning system was so loud that it woke up sleeping household members. That hasn't been an issue for me, because if I'm operating a mop in our house, nobody better be sleeping! As noted in the comments to this review, if you are concerned about noise because the only time you can mop is when you have a house full of napping children and/or if you need to mop when a family member who works the night shift is sleeping or something, note that the spinning mechanism does create the revving sound a toy engine might make. It's less noisy when you've properly centered the mop before you spin, but mopping with this bucket's spinning system won't be the more or less silent activity that one will find with a mop that you can quietly wring by hand. I have back issues that make bending down to wring a wet, heavy mop unpleasant and regardless, I lack the hand strength to thoroughly squeeze water out of a standard mop. This system works like a turbo salad spinner. Makes me wish I had a salad spinner with a foot pedal. Cleaning Mop: The mop fibers appear to be a synthetic and we have not experienced a problem with it either shedding or retaining odors or drying and subsequently smelling sour. I do rinse it thoroughly in the utility sink and dip it in a bit of vinegar before putting it through a final spin. In order to pop off the mop head to wash it more thoroughly in the washing machine, I stand on it for leverage and initially worried that it would break, but it hasn't (after 15 or 20 washes). So far, it's holding up well and much better than we've found with cotton fiber mops. Full Bucket Weight: I was concerned that the bucket would be too heavy for me to easily move when filled with water -- as it's over sized from standard mop bucket systems (dimensions for storage below). There is a sticker-line on the inside that cautions you not to fill above that and I don't fill even up to that line. I have not had a problem lifting the bucket and it's not unstable to move from the sink to the floor. Slipping concerns: I was also concerned about slipping as one reviewer mentioned, but I've found the base to be very stable and my foot hasn't slipped off the pedal yet -- even when I accidentally spilled water on the pedal. Just use care when transferring the mop from the water side into the basket/wringer side. If you are loose with doing so, you can slop a little water over the front edge of the bucket and down onto the foot pedal and around the base of the bucket. I can see that potentially causing a slip issue, but after doing that once, I've paid more attention to transferring and it's not happened again. Mopping floors and walking on them when wet is inherently a slip and fall hazard and I found this system no more dangerous than others. In fact, because the system gets the mop so much dryer, it puts less water on the floor and the floors dry more quickly. Providing less time wet floor time for me to try to earn much needed attention from non-mopping family members by breaking a hip. Spinner Durability: System is holding up well -- but will note that I make an effort to center the mop and handle so that spinning is even and the mop and handle don't angle over and exert uneven force on the basket when spinning. Handle and Length: I'm 5'10" and when it's fully extended, the mop handle is an adequate 51" long (which is more than two inches longer than the handle of the Quickie mop I was using previously). I was initially concerned about whether the two sectioned locking mechanism designed to secure the handle at full height would hold up over time. We've had other handles like that and at some point, they become loose and won't hold. While I still wish there were a way to more permanently secure the handle sections with locking caps or something, it's not been a problem yet and if it comes loose -- there's always duct tape. Mop weight: Handle and mop are very light. (see update below as the "lightness" may come at the expense of durability over time) Storage Space Concern: Because the bucket and handle are over sized, it consumes a lot more space in our small utility closet than other mop buckets. If you have limited space to store a mop bucket and want to check on size before purchasing, plan on needing a minimum of 12" vertical space and basically 20" of depth and 12" of width to store the bucket and basket part. UPDATE: August 2014; The bucket and spin assembly/push pedal are still working perfectly. However, the mop itself (where the two parts of the pole screw into each other) loosened over time and now is broken and won't hold the two parts together. DUCT tape to the rescue! A couple of wraps of Duct tape resolved the issue; but just wanted to update. I have no idea if they've improved the design that links the two parts together; if I can find a replacement mop handle that works with the triangular shaped pads, I'll probably get a new one as I don't know how long the duct tape solution will hold, but for the time being, that was adequate and as I don't take the pole apart to store it, it's not a huge issue.
