Very reasonable priced alternative to G6
I purchased this to replace my Moto E4 Plus, which I liked very much, but had gotten a little aged. I agonized between this and the G6 but ultimately went with this because of the price difference. It's a secondary line for me, as I use it for work, so I really didn't need the upgrades that a G6 brought.
The G6 Play has a beautiful finish and, although the body is plastic as opposed to aluminum and glass, visually it's very sharp looking. I love the placement of the fingerprint sensor on the back, it was always awkward for me personally to position my thumb or finger on the front. This was actually a sticking point for me on the E4, and I never grew to like the front fingerprint sensor. This was also a big reason I went with the G6 play over the G6.
The dimensions make it MUCH more comfortable to hold, as it's longer and more narrow than the E4. It fits comfortably in hand. The slightly larger screen is nice and the over all design is sleek and modern, but not too spacy like the Galaxy S9... I think it's a very clean look, and I prefer it over the G6... That's a personal preference though.
Set up was a breeze. The battery is 4000 mAh with quick charge, which I anticipate will last me two days easily with light to moderate use (mostly calls, texts and some light browsing). The screen is bright. The resolution is fine for such an inexpensive phone. It's much lighter and less bulky than my E4, and I really love that. The sounds is very good, speaker phone is loud and clear. Music sounds better than I expected. I love the moto gestures, which I didn't think I would use and thought they were gimmicky, but have found them pretty useful. Admittedly, they take some getting used to, but then it's piece of cake. The phone came with less bloatware than I am used to and Moto has cleaned up the UI since the E4, it's easier to navigate now and not so busy. The phone seems quick, much quicker than my E4... Noticably so. My Nest streaming video plays well and doesn't bog down the system. So far, there's no lag and the phone hasn't frozen yet. I mention this because usually when migrating from one phone to another, there are freezes and various apps may need to be updated. I haven't experienced that yet. I took it to my grandson's soccer game and was surprised at the quality of the camera. The pictures are better than I expected. While I won't be using it much for photos (my primary phone is the Mate 10 Pro), I was still surprised at the quality. They memory is expandable, which is always nice "in case" I need to use it to store files or large downloads. It has a respectable 3GB or RAM. And it has a headphone jack (yay)! I'm one of those people who still use wired headphones when I'm watching Netflix, and a headphone jack means I can use my AUX cord in the car! That was nice for me, I missed that in my Mate 10. The fact that it IS compatible with ATT, TMobile, Verizon AND Sprint is just icing on the cake, and means I can switch between prepaid services without having to get a new phone. That's awesome!
On to the cons... It isn't a Type C charger... Which means that I still have to carry both micro USB and type C in the car and when I travel. I really wanted a Type C so I didn't need two different chargers, but in the end that wasn't worth $50 more to me for a second phone. That's the only thing I would change, and is the only concern I can see so far. The phone comes with charger, clear silicone case and even the Sim key (takes a nano SIM), but didn't come with any headphones.
Overall, I have to admit I was surprised how much I liked this phone immediately. I'm excited to use it further. The price point is pretty incredible and it was too hard to pass up for me. My E4 didn't NEED to be replaced, but after reading the specs and dimensions of the G6 Play, I couldn't pass it up, and more importantly I'm glad I didn't pass it up. Definitely an upgrade over the E4, visually and performance-wise.
I've attached some pics, comparing it to the E4.
Update- I love this phone way more than I thought I could love a sub $200 phone! I like it so much, I'm creating opportunity to use my work phone more and more. It's quick, intuitive and the size is PERFECT. SCORE For me.
