We did as they recommended and padded sand to the bottom of the pit
EDIT 3/31/16***
I have had this fire pit about 2 weeks. I have had over 6 fires in it.
Attaching the legs was not hard. The spark screen then included is relatively cheap, but would do the job. I don't think we will use it much.
We did as they recommended and padded sand to the bottom of the pit. I would recommend others do the same was it insulates the bottom and allows things to settle. It is portable, but only around the yard. I wouldn't recommend for travel.
I would buy this again, and recommend it to others.
EDIT 3/31/16*** After a year or so of use, I am still happy with my purchase. I used an old grill cover for keeping it out of the rain, and put a 5gallon bucket under the grill cover, to create a "teepee" like look that directs water off of the tarp. Works well.
