Good stainless steel hooks that meet their load ratings
Overall, these seem to be good hangers that meet their specs. They are easy to install and remove, and the holes they leave are easily patched. They do command a premium price for the convenient installation and easy removal, so you will have to weigh whether the added convenience is worth the few dollars for you.
INSTALLATION:
These install easily -- you just push them in and they're installed. There are a couple things to keep in mind. though. These are really only for drywall. If you have an older house with plaster and lath, these will not work. If you have concrete walls, these will not work. If you have cementboard, these will not work. It should be obvious from the listing, but I'm just explicitly clarifying for anyone who wasn't reading closely. Additionally, if you have drywall less than 0.5" thick, you can't install this over a stud! this part was not made clear in the listing. The hooks stick out behind the face by about 0.5". The hooks are blunt -- they will go into drywall, but they are not sharp enough to penetrate wood. So, if you have 3/8" drywall, the hooks will go all the way through your drywall and protrude a small amount from the back -- if there is a stud there, you will not be able to insert this all the way! 3M does have a pretty slick locating feature with adhesive foam blocks. Other reviewers covered this in detail, so I won't go into detail here. Suffice it to say it does work well and makes accurate installation easy. However, I am not sure how much all these one-time-use foam blocks add to the cost of this product.
MATERIAL:
If you are a bit of a nerd like I am, you are probably curious what "Engineered hardened steel" is. This is how 3M describes the material. I assumed this is probably just marketing hyperbole, but I do know 3M has a history of relatively innovative products/materials, so I thought maybe there is some special alloy they are using. To answer this, I used my XRF analyzer to probe the metal composition. It turns out their special engineered steel is just... 304 stainless steel. So my initial assumption seems to be correct (marketing hyperbole). Perhaps they are using a special top-secret heat-treating process, but I doubt it. Although I'm (mildly) disappointed they aren't using some new space-age alloy, I am glad to see they are using stainless steel. It should hold up very well in a moist environment, such as a bathroom.
LOAD CAPACITY:
The hooks I received have a listed rating of 25lbs. If you look at the fine print, their listed capacity is for 0.5" drywall in environments not exceeding 50% relative humidity -- in more humid environments they down-rate it to 15lbs due to weakening of the drywall. I did test this load rating with some scrap drywall I had. The only scrap I had was 3/8" drywall (which is thinner than their recommendation), so I assume the hooks will hold more weight in a 0.5" thick drywall than my tests show. I also tested this in an environment with about 40% relative humidity. These hooks help up 25lbs with no issues in my 3/8" drywall. As such, I do not anticipate any issues at all with 25lbs in 0.5" thick drywall. At 40lbs, the hook still held, but barely. Any minor movement of the weight caused the hook to fail. At 50lbs, the hook pulled out of the drywall right away. One of the photos I posted shows what the holes looks like when you purposely take out the anchor vs. when it pulls out due to being overloaded. As you can see, even when the hooks failed they did not leave a large gouge in the drywall. This is in stark contrast to when standard drywall anchors fail -- they leave a huge hole in the drywall for you to patch up. Also worth noting, after the hook pulled out of the wall due to overloading, the hook appeared undamaged and easily reusable.
