This curling iron is a game changer!
First things first - I love this curling iron. Initially, I was hesitant to spend so much money on a product that I wasn't sure about, but this is the best $130 I ever spent on a beauty product. Yes, it takes a little getting used to if you are hair-stylistically-challenged (yes, I made up that term, but you know who you are). In fact, the VERY first thing I did with this iron after plugging it in was to immediately burn myself on the neck. Luckily, I have a lot of fashionable scarves, and it was winter, so I was mostly able to hide the evidence.
I suggest that you first watch several you tube videos of people using this product. I know that you're now thinking "Who has the kind of time to watch you tube videos of girls styling their hair and giving pointers on how to use an effing curling iron?" Let me point out that YOU are currently reading my very long winded review of an effing curling iron, so obviously you've got a few minutes to spare.
Once you've watched the videos, practice using this product BEFORE you plug it in. (Remember it's not actually going to curl your hair when it's not hot - just getting that out of the way.) Just get comfortable holding it, wrapping your hair around it (remember - the glove goes on the hand that will be wrapping the hair, NOT the hand that is holding the handle, another rookie mistake that I made). Practice maneuvering the iron on both sides and the back of your hair, just to get a feel for it. Now, you're ready to start curling!
At this point, I'll share one more embarrassing detail of my journey with this magic wand. After the initial neck burn, I was gun shy when using this, so I took to wrapping a small towel around my neck and securing it with a hair clip. It served as an extra safeguard against further scarring. However, I'm not sure my husband has recovered from walking in on me in our bathroom while I was styling my hair, wearing one glove and a cravat, so let's just use "scarring" in the physical sense of the word here.
Once you're heated this baby up and are wearing whatever protective gear you deem necessary, start by curling small sections of your hair. If you are one of those naturally talented people who can do this without the use of 7 hair clips (8, if you count the one on my cravat), more power to you. For the rest of us, I find it works well to section your hair off with clips, and curl one section at a time. One pro-tip that I learned from you tube is to gently cradle the curl for a few seconds while it cools, as this helps to set the curl. I know, I know, you're now thinking "Gently cradle the CURL? What kind of lunatic is writing this review and why doesn't she have any hobbies??" Again, not to call your kettle black, but let's remember that you're now on paragraph 5 of a CURLING IRON review, so let's just make this a judgement-free zone from here on out, shall we?
Do yourself, your hair, and mankind a favor and pick up this life changing curling iron. Thank me later.
