SOLID
Installed two of these on my Axiom rear rack and have been using them for the past week. Here are my early impressions. The PROS: Inexpensive-looking (Compared to pannier bags or other solution). You can leave these on your bike and I doubt anyone would go through the trouble of stealing them. Especially if they're scuffed up. Lightweight and collapsible. When you're not transporting cargo, they stay put tightly and out of the way. The locking mechanism seems crude, but it works. Two baskets carry a week's worth of groceries. Surprisingly quiet when riding in either open or closed position. I was expecting worse. The closed position is silent even over bumps. The open position also behaves very well when nothing is being carried. Minimal rattles. When items are in the baskets, the effect often baffles the few rattles further. The SO-SO: The included mounting hardware isn't as bad as most reviewers make it out to be, although I think there may have been a revision with my recent purchase. (August 2015). I ended up using only two of the three included brackets because the included screws were a bit too short to use with my thick Axiom rack at the lower mounting point. I ended up reinforcing the baskets to the rack at 5 additional points with black zip-ties. My baskets are black, so it still looks super clean and I'm confident the baskets are secure. Although the baskets seem to be able to carry a good amount of volume and weight, the folding short sides do play around a little bit while riding with the baskets in the open position. Not a huge concern, but worth noting. Also worth mentioning is that the baskets seem about 10% in real life than they do in the photos. This will vary with individual perception I guess. Strapping bungee cords to keep your gear in place is obviously super easy, but if you have some of the heavier duty cords (like i use to secure my NY Kryptonite lock to the rack), it might put stress on the baskets. I recommend using lighter gauge bungees or bungee nets to strap everything in nicely. I'm thinking of also DIYing an additional hinged "top cap" to fold over the front when not in use The CONS: Not waterproof (Obviously), but I never ride in the rain, so this doesn't matter to me. I guess a waterproof bag could be placed in these for those that need that function. No quick release option. Once these are on your rack, they are most likely going to be a pain to take off, so I've decided to just leave them on permanently and just take the rack off the bike completely with these attached when I just want to ride light for fun. OVERALL: The most inexpensive out-of-the-box option for extra bike storage. No frills and super functional. Not very theft worthy at all. Mounting may take some creativity, but once they're on your rack, they're solid. Don't hesitate and pull the trigger. NYC rider
