Best Roto Cooler period! Yeti who?-2 Updates
Got the 45 last week and love it! I thoroughly researched every roto cooler on the market and all tests and reviews point to the RTIC as not only the best bang for the buck, but the best cooler period. I do wish that it had an integrated bottle opener and perhaps a tab to release pressure prior to opening, but those are just nice to haves and hopefully RTIC will integrate those features into the next model.
Be warned, this is a heavy cooler. Full of drinks and ice, you are looking at 50lbs or more. But...here's a secret, because this thing retains cold so well, instead of jamming it full of ice like a traditional cooler, use a couple large ice packs and a 5lb bag of ice. This will last at least a few days. Obviously, more ice equals longer cold times but if you're just a weekend warrior like myself, this hack works well.
So how does it compare to Yeti, Pelican, Grizzly etc? Well, you'll be hard pressed to find ANY difference in quality and cold times. I do like Yeti and have a few of their items but I'm an RTIC guy now.
UPDATE-Took the RTIC on a 4 day camping trip and used 3 ice packs and a 5lb bag of ice. Came home and checked cooler after a few more days. Results-the water was ice cold and still had a few chips of ice. That's 6 days and still holding the cold with very little ice!!
SECOND UPDATE-4 months of continuos use and no issues whatsoever. If you're wondering what ice retention is like when temps are not really hot, well I filled the cooler with 20lbs of ice and beer on December 17 and left the cooler in my garage. 22 days later (!!!!), I still had full bags of ice despite the temps in the garage getting up to the mid 60s for several days in a row.
