It works in spite of the awful reviews
My house does not have a wired doorbell so I purchased the Ring 2 doorbell which runs entirely on battery. With my current usage of about eight events per day the battery needs to be charged every three months.
Since it would be difficult to run power to the front door I looked for a solar charger but did not want to mount a large solar panel at the front door. This charger looked like the perfect solution but I was concerned when I started reading all the negative reviews. I decided to take a chance and I am glad that I did.
Those that wrote negative reviews maybe had high expectations of what this charger is capable of doing. These are small solar panels and unlikely to provide a full charge to an empty battery. All I wanted was to extend the duration between charges and for that it’s a perfect solution.
I had this charger in operation for the past month and the battery level dropped only about 2% in one month. Without the charger it would have dropped 30% or more. I can attest to the fact that the charger actually does something because I have seen the battery level actually go up a percent or two on some days. Your results will vary depending on the amount of direct sunshine and the number of ring events which consume battery power to transmit footage over Wi-Fi.
My doorbell receives direct sunlight only about two hours per day and even then because of the angle of the sun not all panels are getting sunshine. The attached photo shows the sunlight at the halfway point of the two hour interval and you see only half of one side has direct sun. Yet two hours of direct sun over parts of the panels is enough to accomplish the goal. I expect my time between charges will be extended from 3 months to a year or even longer recognizing that the amount of direct sun and doorbell usage will vary throughout the year..
So if your goal is to extend the time between charges and if your doorbell does get some direct sunlight then this charger is a perfect solution. If you want more than that you should look at a charger with a full solar panel or consider running wires to the Ring doorbell.
