★★☆☆☆
Not really worthy of $180 and would still be questionable at ~$90
I have purchased the set that included the northern hemisphere pack and the additional northern lights disc. This review was after viewing the northern lights. For the $180 I paid I was expecting much more. I think $30 went into the extravagant packaging. Quite honestly I believe I had a similar toy when I was a child and it came from big lots for maybe $15-20. This is nothing more than a plastic color disc that is spun around with a light shining through. The entirety of the image remains in focus the entire revolution. There's no twinkling or anything remarkable that grabs my attention. For children and infants, this is probably fine. For the adults who have given reviews of "best ever" and "totally worth"... I really question their intelligence and maturity level. As far as construction, there is more complexity to a kaleidoscope. Biggest CON: Dust! For nearly a $200 price tag and all these "improvements" why has a dust cover been overlooked? Also, for this price the discs really should be glass. The images are magnified. Do labs use plastic slides with microscopes?..No! Now think why. This plastic is much softer and scratches very easily, which will be reflected on your ceiling. Polishing the disc between uses will be absolutely necessary. With all this said, I ultimately purchased this after what I thought to be thorough research so this may be "the best" available. I think for the price point someone with access to the means to design and manufacture an alternative could really take this entire market over.
