TLDR: The soft silicone tip popped off the syringe and down my cat's throat, which cost $2832 to remove by emergency endoscopy.
One of my cat's, Poppy, needs to begrudgingly take a pill every day. We've struggled with finding a way to do this that doesn't distress him too much while also making sure he swallowed it. I'd heard of pill gun/syringes devices and bought this one around 2 months ago. The difference was night and day, a real game changer.
Until last night I would have rated this 5 stars. It did what it claimed and did it pretty well. It popped the pill deep into his throat, if aimed right, so he couldn't cheek it and spit it out discretely later. It shortened the whole pill giving process and was much less distressing for him. Previously it would take a couple minutes to do and tick him off enough to give us a cold shoulder for a while. With this device it took maybe 30 seconds and he'd stay with us on the couch as if nothing happened.
Last night we went through our usual routine of giving him his pill, but the 1 inch silicone tip that holds the pill shot off instead and went down his throat. Naturally we freaked and took him to the nearest vet ER where they saw it on xray but he didn't puke it up when they induced emesis. They recommended an immediate endoscopy (a tube camera with grabbers they stuck down his throat) as it wasn't in his intestines yet (it would have meant surgery if it got in there) and were luckily able to remove it without complications.
I guess what I'm taking away from this, besides a $2832 vet bill, is that my next pill gun/syringe will not have removable tips. The concept works, but the execution is crucial. I caution all other pet owners considering these devices to do the same.
