The Wallet Finish is Coming Off and Sticking to My Cards!
I spent a considerable amount of time shopping for a travel wallet that could neatly accommodate an American passport, cards, and various contents and still fit into my inner sports jacket pocket. I had purchased one wallet, which barely fit when fully loaded, and was very difficult to get into that pocket and even harder to pull it out. Disappointed, I continued my search until I came upon this wallet by Travel Navigator, which seemed to have the right dimensions and number of card slots. Amazon sent the wallet quickly and was nicely packaged by Travel Navigator Accessories. The wallet outside surface appeared to be a fine-grained, soft black leather. The quality of the stitching on the interior looked of reasonable quality. I was very pleased with how it could evenly distribute about eight cards (or more), passport, and other contents (e.g., bills and receipts) and still slide nicely in and out of my jacket pocket. The wallet design and dimensions worked so well that I found that I could remove the passport and use the same wallet at home also. Last summer, I would have given this product five stars and called it my all-purpose travel wallet.
However, after several weeks of wear, a significant problem with the wallet material began to appear. While the outside of the wallet did not appear to have any noticeable wear even after several months of constant use, the inside card pockets was another matter entirely. The finish on the wallet material around the slots for cards and above the passport pocket began to bind to the plastic of the cards and wear off where the corners of the passport rested on it. I began to suspect that interior of the wallet either did not have a typical finish on the leather or that the inside of the wallet is not leather at all. They do describe the wallet as being made with 100% leather, but that is not the same as being 100% made with leather. Aside from the aesthetic problem of having gray spots appear in several places inside the wallet where the finish wore off, whatever came off the wallet stuck firmly to my various plastic cards (but fortunately not to the passport cover), marking both fronts and backs.
Worse, this black substance doesn't come off easily. For the tougher PVC cards, it can be removed with careful and prolonged scraping with a fingernail. However, bits of the magnetic tap on one ID card came off with the wallet material that was stuck to it. This procedure is harder on plastic coated paper cards. Whatever this material is, it doesn't appear to dissolve in water or alcohol. I haven't tried acetate yet, but I'm afraid of what that might do to the integrity of my cards. The bottom line is, what I thought was my long sought, perfectly designed all-purpose travel wallet is ruining my cards and making a mess (and the wallet doesn't look so great as a result also). I would not recommend this wallet unless you only plan to use it for a very short trip.
UPDATE: Travel Navigator Accessories responded very quickly to my concerns (see comment), were very courteous and understanding, and totally refunded my money. They've indicated that this wallet was not constructed with lower-quality leather (e.g., bonded leather) and never encountered the problems that I experienced. So, maybe it's a fluke. I will reiterate that I was very pleased with the quality of the design and construction, sans the difficulties that I had with the particular wallet that I received.
