For over a year, I've been starting my day with a home-made drink consisting of organic ground turmeric, organic coconut milk, organic ground black pepper, and local raw honey. I shake it up and drink it down. Yummy! I've been buying organic, ground turmeric from a local health food store here in Grand Rapids. They sell it in bags that cost around $4.50 or so. I've also tried the organic turmeric from Sam's Club. When I discovered Amazon sells turmeric I thought I'd struck the mother load. I read up on this particular brand - Jiva Organics - and thought the price was outstanding for organic, ground turmeric. So I ordered it. When it arrived, I immediately noticed it smelled slightly different from the turmeric I've been using. Richer, perhaps. More complexity. I thought, "This must be the real deal." When I added it to my morning turmeric drink, though, my thought changed to, "Yuck. What is this stuff?" Of all the turmerics I've tried - and, remember, I drink it every morning, from three different sources - this one from Jiva Organics is the worst tasting. It is bitter and unpleasant. Leaves behind a sharp, acrid taste in my mouth. I can't even add enough honey to offset it. It's just bitter. Maybe people use this for cooking, which is entirely possible. It might taste differently in a meal. But used as a drink, this is not the brand to buy. It doesn't blend well, flavor-wise, and no amount of sweetener can get rid of the bitter aftertaste. So Jiva Organics may be real organic turmeric. And it may be of a high quality. But it's not one I will ever buy again.f UPDATE: I found out from the local health food store the source of the ground turmeric they sell.
