Extremely Disappointed
Rating is based entirely on the physical formatting and packaging. Not the creative side of the set. To say I’m extremely disappointed is an understatement. When I first heard about “The Stand” being released on Blu-Ray I rejoiced. I went ahead and pre-ordered, patiently waited for the release date. It got here today and thinking of a “The Stand” marathon, I opened the packaging and finally opened the Blu-Ray case. One disc. That’s right, all four episodes on one disc. Disappointment grew as I KNEW the quality was going to be slipshod. I was primed for what was to come. Sliding the disc into my Blu-Ray player, I saw there were the 4 episodes and a couple of extras. I don’t like going to theaters and hearing people talking during the movie, or when watching a movie at home I don’t want anyone talking. So, I didn’t pay any attention to the Commentary Track. But I did start up the “Making of ‘The Stand’” featurette. Standard TV aspect ratio (4 x 3), and it was the same featurette as included in the regular DVD set. I visibly sighed in disappointment. On to the first episode, “The Plague”. No remastering. It’s still in the Standard TV aspect ratio (4 x 3). Right, the two black bars to the right and left of the picture. Amazingly, the DVD version is full-frame (16 x 9). The video quality might, MIGHT be a little bit better than my DVD set (says it’s in 1080p), but nothing to get excited about. It seems CBS chintzed out and just repackaged it in the Blu-Ray format. Not Amazon’s fault. Nor their vendor’s fault. This is all on CBS. What a letdown.
