Broad City fan can’t stomach this special
Full disclosure. I would not consider myself a progressive. However, most the people I associate with are progressive or at the very least center-left, politically. And I’m not opposed to listening to what they have to say or patronizing creative works from progressives. Why does this matter? Well, because this stand-up has a very specific target demo: Far left progressives who reject traditional gender norms, oppose capitalism, and despise the Boomer generation. It is entirely possible that I didn’t find this at all entertaining because I don’t agree with Illana’s views (or more accurate, found her views delusional and incomprehensible, especially when it came to gender identity). I think it’s more likely I didn’t find this at all entertaining because it was sparse on actual jokes. Yes an hour long stand-up special lacking jokes. What then, you may ask, does the special consist of? Well, moralizing, of course. What else? And to be frank, that’s probably exactly what her audience expected and wanted to see. I was a big fan of Broad City, although, admittedly, I haven’t seen it all. But what I have seen was very funny. Considering her stellar work in Broad City, I thought I’d give this special a chance. Ultimately though, it just isn’t funny. At all. If you are a far left progressive that is just looking to watch someone who agrees with your views “preach to the choir,” look no more. If you want to watch a stand up special with, you know, jokes, look elsewhere.
