Never Been So Disappointed In A Book
I have never been so disappointed in a book. From the ratings and the book's description, I expected a humorous, quirky, rom-com that would greatly appeal to my inner nerd. Not once did I read anything I considered LOL funny... Instead this book was sad and disturbing. I cannot understand how a book full of domestic violence, rape, suicide, death, bullying, sexism and other dark subjects is considered funny. The writing is very preachy and the author had an obvious agenda. Except for 2-3 male characters, every man in the book was one-dimensional and horrible. I quickly grew weary of the man-bashing. As a female engineer in a male dominated field, I know exactly how unrealistic these extreme situations were. It's as if the author took every single bad experience she ever heard about and threw it the main character. There would have been at least ONE objective and reasonable man at Hastings because otherwise a woman without a degree would never have been hired as a research scientist. The worst part is the never ending religion bashing. Every religious leader is evil, a liar, a pedophile, greedy, immoral, deceitful, or cruel. Every Christian is judgemental, weak, and doesn't believe in science. There are ridiculous debates against God and the Bible that were obviously not well researched. I wonder what horrific experience the author suffered to have such a deep hate and misunderstanding of religion. The MC is brilliant and beautiful, but socially stupid. Her 4 year old daughter is brilliant and reading 'Five Years With the Congo Canibals' and 'War and Peace'. Her soulmate is brilliant and athletic, but chooses a low-ball job offer because it has good weather. Her dog is brilliant and knows over 900 words, many of which he learned from reading a picture book with the MC. The whole story is extreme, and there is no balance. It quickly becomes tedious and tiring. One part that I did like was the cooking show. It's why I rated the book any stars at all. I regret purchasing this book and wish I'd waited for a library copy.
