This Product MAY kill you - it almost killed me
PLEASE, PLEASE DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT! I installed this product in my garage very, very carefully (note what the other reviewers say about the included bolts - they're not of good quality). When I was through installing, I tested it using progressively more weight each time. Finally, when I was satisfied that it was working properly and would hold the weight, I used it to hoist my items. All was good for about two weeks or maybe a month. Then - trouble. I wanted to get one of my items down from the lift, so I closed my garage door and started lowering the lift - THANK HEAVENS I wasn't standing below it (it may seem like common sense that one wouldn't stand under it while lowering it themselves, but it's also conceivable to think that someone (or someone's kids) may). While lowering the lift it, lowered a couple of inches and then seemed to get bound up. All of the sudden: BAAAAAAMMMMM! The the platform with everything on it came crashing down (note that because I followed the advice of others on amazon to use larger lag bolts, the unit actually stayed mounted). I was VERY, VERY lucky - the only injury I suffered was from the cranking rod which kicked back and hit me square between the eyes (I immediately went next door and my neighbor - a nurse - took care of me). I had a terrible headache for a few days - but I just kept thinking about how bad it could have been.
It's important to know that the unit lowers to about 3 1/2 to 4 feet(depending on the height of the garage (mine is about 13 feet)). Why is this important? Because that means that if (when) the system fails (as mine did), it's not going to stop above the height of the average person's head. It's going to continue to fall after it hits your head and then continue for a couple of feet after that. That's a couple of hundred pounds falling on your head (at worst). VERY DANGEROUS!
I called RACOR (and their parent company) in Illinois and fully informed them about the defect. They paid me $1,500.00 to take care of the situation (note that the settlement document did NOT contain a confidentiality provision - I wouldn't have signed it if it had - so I'm allowed to talk about this freely). I'm sure I could have gotten more, but I was only after recouping my time for the installation (which was A LOT).
I'm attaching a picture or two. The most telling of them are the picture of the platform - unlike the rest of the unit, the platform is made of heavy steel (probaly weighs close to 40 pounds by itself). Even so, look at the bend in the platform - that's how much force was coming down with the platform. Imagine what would have done to your car (or your head!). I would URGE Amazon to discontinue the use of the product. Someone will eventually be killed by this product - it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when. Like I said, I requested that RACOR to discontinue it, but they apparently have decided to take the risk.
PLEASE don't buy this product, for your own safety. It's a great concept, but horrible, horrible design/product quality. If you ignore my review, and nevertheless buy this product, at least don't use the bolts they provide - pay attention to what the other reviewers have said. But, you shouldn't buy it anyway!
