★★☆☆☆
This woman is a pyschology masters student and she's more worried about her virginity...
...than asking basic questions about her situation. Where is she? How long has she been off earth? How far are they from earth? What is the morality of this species since they decided to take beings of agency against their will away from their world? No, she's more concerned with linking them to elves and comparing their powers to super heroes - because someone with the wherewithal studying to be a psychologist as a future profession would totally have that be the first thing she thinks! Don't give your characters these intellectual occupations if you are not going to address their personalities to said professions accordingly. It's lazy AF. Also, why are all the women in these stories virgins!!!??? Dude is on a planet where men outnumber women 4-5 to 1, and he's not a virgin, but she is!? You wanna know the reason, and it does not take a psychology major to tell you, because even though these are women fantasy stories written for women, they still subscribe to patriarchy in saying that virginal women are better than experienced women. And this trope never speaks too well of the guy either; He's the best she's ever had because he's the ONLY one she's ever had? Dudes wanna trust that? It's such an offshoot of the 'Born Sexy Yesterday' trope. All the virgins I've ever known in my life never constantly contemplate their virginity! That tells me that this writer is oblivious to believing virgins can be complex dynamic individuals, you know, like someone studying to be a psychologist might be... Wouldn't you rather read a story about a woman who has had the best sex in her life instead of the FIRST sex in her life? I swear, she cared more about her virginity than she did about her sexual imprisonment! I honestly stopped reading about 1/3 in. Didn't matter how well these people treated the women, they were still slaves reduced to the fact they had wombs. Also, I found it amusing that there are billions of women on the planet earth, but these aliens seem to only pick 20 year old white women. But don't worry, they're diverse, because they all have different hair colors!!! Eh! It speaks to the myopic view of how this writer sees this world. Why not have a woman from, say, Indonesia, and she's freaked out that she can understand them speaking to her because of a language thing in the air or something. No, all white, all English speaking, and all young, and seemingly from America. I think the reason may be because the writer might be afraid to create a character they don't relate to, whether it be race, or religion, or even ideology. But...that's what writers are supposed to do, right? Also the homogeneous looks of the aliens. Clearly they could be as diverse as the human race, right? No, all angled white haired white looking men. Ugh. I'm over this stuff. I stopped reading when the captain handed her the drink and she chugged it, and he was all "You are supposed to drink that slowly." And she would know that HOW!? It didn't matter because the writer thought it would be funny to put that joke in, but it wasn't funny, it was a set up. Ugh, skip this slop.
