Good System, with Design Flaws
I ordered the Dotz Cord ID Pro Cord & Cable Identification System, 12 Count, in Assorted Colors for $7.99 with free Prime shipping.
I used these in conjunction with several cable turtles and a cord organizer box to tackle the maze of cables and wires behind the desk in my home office.
After much contemplation, I selected these for several key reasons: The labels are encased in a plastic window, so I figured this would enhance the longevity of the organizing system. I also liked how they clip around the entire cord. They don't create extra volume in the cord's diameter and they appear much cleaner looking than the loose hanging labels that resemble gift tags. This design eliminates the risk of residue and the associated dust trap that often occurs with adhesive labeling.
I love what these cord ID's empowered me to do... Create an uncluttered work space that's user friendly, easy to tear down and will be simple to reassemble.
They fit a large range of cables, from my skinniest audio cable for the speakers, to the thick cable for my commercial-sized printer.
The label paper takes to ink well. I used a Sharpie pen to write on the them. As long as you allow the ink to dry, it won't smear.
With that said.... There's some major design flaws in this system....
The labels don't just slide in. They require a bit of shaping to insert them into the window and get them to lay right. I found that bending them horizontally to create a slight crease works best.
The label must be placed on the side of the window with the latch. The instructions also mention something about buying a separate label if you want one to fit the non-latch side...... Wow.... Seriously? IDK, attempting to up-sell such a minor item (rather than just including it in the 1st place)... That just rubbed me wrong.
I really like the assorted colors because it allows for color-coding. The one issue with this is that a few of the colors, especially the blue and orange ID's, are a bit dark, so it's difficult to see the label inside. I wish they were more transparent.
It comes with 2 sets of labels that are pre-printed with the numbers 1-6. It also includes 8 extra blank labels. The 2 sets of enclosed stickers are also pre-printed with the numbers 1-6. I assume the purpose is to ID the two ends of the cord with a label and attach a sticker to both the input and output designations. However, I found that I could have used a couple extra stickers as I encountered some "regrade wires" that didn't quite fit this system. Therefore, I really wish it came with a few blank ones.
Despite a couple flaws, I still like these more than any of the other cord identification systems out there that I've seen; most of which, in my blunt opinion, are garbage.
TIP: Since there are a couple of people in my household that are self-described as "tech-illiterate," I differentiated between input and output by labeling each set of ID's with designations; eg: Tower and Tower to Outlet, Printer and Printer to Outlet. This way, if anyone has to disconnect or add to the system while I'm away, it should be super easy to reassemble (at least, I hope, Lol!)
