NOT FOR KAYAKS
DO NOT USE to transport kayaks. I ordered and installed these on my recently purchased Prius about 3 weeks ago. The directions were very straightforward and I followed them assiduously. I was very excited to be able to get my kayaks loaded on top of my new car. They felt strong and secure, so I attached J-racks. Sad to say, the metal clips that attach to the car door frame are very clearly not strong enough for this application. On the sixth or seventh trip, one of the clips experienced a massive failure and the entire thing (2 kayaks, well under the 150 lb listed limit) took flight from the top of the car in the middle of the highway. My beloved carbon fiber Eddyline Sandpiper shattered on the asphalt when it came down. I am dejected. If someone had been following me closely they'd have been toast - at least in that regard, I am incredibly lucky (and so is AUXMART).
After I cleared the detritus from the highway, with cars zinging by me at 65 mph, I got a chance a look at the wreckage. The postmortem reveals that one of the metal clips bent under the stress and caused the front bar to detach. The back bar alone was not enough to hold the entire contraption on the car, and away she went. I weep for my dead 'yak. If you're looking to put something on top of your car that will cause substantial wind resistance, these cross bars are not for you.
The first picture, where you can see my hand, is how the clip originally looked. A nice 90 degree angle. The second picture is the clip that failed. Not even close to a 90 degree angle.
Kayakers, these are not for you. Move on.
