Not a well-written protagonist
This book is a great example of why I typically avoid female protagonists if they're written by a male author. It always ends up really clear that the author has no idea how to write women as believable characters, instead falling back on weird tropes about jealousy (I was kind of appalled at how much jealousy defined the heroine's character) and insecurity and being kind of creepy with physical descriptions. In this particular book, the first cringe came when the heroine described her (teenage!) best friend's chest as "plump" in a flashback. The second came when she threw a tantrum in a grocery store because a guy she had gone on a single date with was talking to another woman. The third came when she was so adamant about being taken seriously!!!! and refusing male protection so she could be a strong woman!!!! it was so badly emphasized that it bordered on the satirical. And of course, the crowning glory: the story ended with the heroine being broken because she was "too arrogant" (in spite of the male protagonist having -exactly- the same problem) and learning that it was important to rely on the men in her life to protect her, even if it meant deceiving her and treating her like a child. Considering the author had her rail against this for most of the book, it came off... badly. I was really hoping for a great new series, but this is just awful. I got this through Kindle Unlimited, but I wouldn't even read the next book for free.
