confusing for the intended age group
This book is intended for preschoolers-1st graders, keep in mind that children are not able to think abstractly until much later (around12 years old). This book is not an appropriate resource for teaching this age group about transgender issues. This book teaches that liking bugs, short hair, and playing in mud makes a child a boy. It teaches that liking dresses and long hair makes a child a girl. Young kids will interpret this literally as a rule of the universe. They may mistake a change in their personal interests with literally being the opposite sex, which is very confusing for children who are not transgender. What will kids think if they take the message of this book and encounter a boy who wants to wear a dress, or a girl that cuts her hair short? They are going to inform the other child that they are actually the opposite sex. That is troubling for a lot of reasons. I take the view that girls and boys should be free to wear and like whatever they want without pressure to identify as the opposite sex.
Children who are in that age range often ask about where babies come from or about the physical differences between males and females. It is not possible to teach that boys and girls are defined by biological reproductive roles AND that boys and girls are defined by their interests. 4-6 year olds need very simple answers from authority figures about questions of material reality.
