PLASMAWAVE PRODUCES OZONE
"Plasmawave" is just a fancy word for ionization and electric air purifying. This means that despite Winix's claims, ozone is produced in small amounts. The quantity of ozone produced is low enough to pass most testing standards. However, ozone does not decay for a very long time meaning that it builds up in your home and in your lungs. Prolonged usage of this "plasmawave technology" will eventually produce harmful effects in those who are exposed to it. Especially those with preexisting respiratory conditions (asthma, allergies, etc.)! Some people may be allergic to ozone, as I suspect I may be.
I bought this believing I had made a good choice for myself, my family, and my pets. However, after having the fan on turbo with the plasma wave I noticed my lungs begin to burn and my cat who has asthma begin to sneeze. It had been a full hour and my chest still hurts. My cat seems to be fine, but it did scare me into doing extensive research on "plasmawave".
The final verdict is that yes, despite their claims, this unit and all other units using any "plasmawave" produce ozone which is harmful for your health.
If you are fine with all of the above, the air purifier works like a charm. It gets rid of even the most potent, lingering smells. And very quickly! It is very quiet at its lowest setting and even on turbo it just sounds like a $40 fan you buy at Walmart. Meaning, not too loud at all but too annoying to sleep.
The unit itself is pretty large. It dwarfed my big, tall cat. It's not too heavy to carry up two flights of stairs when you are out of shape! It is easy to take apart and it is pretty easy to use.
Overall, I'm very disappointed in the fact it produces ozone because it's an otherwise fantastic air purifier. You can turn off plasmawave, but there is no research on whether or not ozone is created when it's off and I'm too afraid to risk it. 5/5 for quality and effectiveness. However, -10/5 for lying about one of the most harmful toxins still allowed in our homes. I'd down 50 cups of ramen (full of GMOs, saturated fats, sodium and all the general crap everyone hates) before I expose this to my family again.
