I guess I still have a job...
I can say I've waited yyyeaarrss, for this device. I was initially skeptical about it but the price was mostly kept me away when this device was introduced in the early 00's; so i waited. years would pass and this device just kept getting more updates more refreshes and just continued to succeed in both presence, popularity and review. I finally decided "F it" I'll pull the trigger spend the thousand dollars and get one, the spouse won't complain when the carpet is constantly clean and no one knows how it got done.
Background, the roomba is assigned to one room where it has a clear 8 foot "L" (four feet one side, four feet another) to clean, the room has a really shaggy carpet and a furry Aussie shepherd inhabits the room.
I get the roomba, unpack it; placing the dock in a neutral area and docking the Roomba to charge; meanwhile I download the app. I immediately go through the app to set it up, downloading the OTA update, and installing it; meanwhile clearing the floor of all clutter and debris. The room is now clear and ready, the device is setup and charged, and we are ready to go.
I hit the big clean button on the app and get a pleasant 5 beat chime and off it goes, down the base and onto the carpet, first thing I notice is it is suuppper quiet, wow this is going to be great, i wait, acting as if i don't notice it but really super eager to see the amazing job it's done and how easily I can argue the thousand dollars is spent.... wait, I look down, the device has a big red circle around it; I rush down to take a look, and lift it up, "Clear the brushes and hit clean to continue".. I look at the silicone brushes and, nothing. I put it down and hit clean, it starts again, I jump back on my bed.. is going to be well worth it, I mean the regular vacuum is super archaic and the fact we can just set it and forget it is a .... I look down and the device has a red ring on it, I lift it up "Clear the brushes and hit clean to continue".. I look at the silicone brushes and the three pointed main brush, nothing, I open the debris canister and it it has barley anything in it, I put it down and hit clean, it starts again revisiting the same spots, great it's thorough.. red ring, I lift i check nothing, drop hit clean, reaches another spot, red ring... your seeing a pattern right...
I finally lift the device and send it home, maybe it's time for another... what sounds like a jet taking off occurs, the device when it docks is immediate vacuumed by the dock, and the vacuum is soooo powerful, there is no way it can be in the same room as ANYONE and be done in the middle of the night, this thing is sooo loud, you can hear it down the hall, a long eight foot soundproofed hall.
I begin to look through the app to see if there is anything i can do, and behold i see an ability to train the roomba, so I hit train, I know this'll do the trick, the roomba will go about learn the terrain the in's and out, learn where to duck, where to dive, when to turn one wheel, etc... So training it begins, I leave the room, and let it do it's thing, super excited to see the map it produces the digital way it reads my room, a little patience and it will all be worth it. "The training is complete", reads on my phone through a notification... I open the app and "5%" reads on the map; huh?, I hit train again, close the app and go back to my dinner "The training is complete", I open the app and "10%", wait... is this thing going to make me train it 20 times.... at 10 minutes a piece... SPOILER ALERT: yes, yes it does. I complete the training a few hours later at 100%, and dock it for the night.
The next day I come home and see my toddler has made a mess with some goldfish crumbs, my dogs has shed a bit, there is some sand from my boys play date, and overall the carpet could use a nice vacuuming. I make sure the floor is clear the vacuum has a nice clear path the clean. I clear everyone out of the room and close the door, open the app and hit the big "Clean" button (secretly I'm listening to hear the five beat sound that it makes when it first starts". App tells me cleaning is in progress. I go to have a seat, I sit down ... Notification "Your Roomba requires attention", What?, I go to the room and in the exact same spot it was originally getting stuck in, it got stuck again, I lift the device and set it down, and hit the clean button. It begins, moves a few feet, I watch, and here it comes, another spot where it would get stuck, here is the true test... it get's stuck, a notification pops up on my phone, "Your Roomba requires attention". I lift the device check it, and nothing, no hair, no debris, nothing. I set it down, and check the manual, nothing to help. I read there is a way to "Spot clean", so finally i give up, let's just focus on this device as a nice way to clean a single specific area, maybe this won't be the device I can clean the whole room with. I place the device right on top of the goldfish and sand area, and hit the "cross hair" button located to the right of the clean button on the device, and it begins, it moves in a spiral motion, around the mess... only the mess is still there, all the goldfish, all the sand, all the hair... still there. I try it again, only this time I rub the carpet to get it to all come to the top, loosen it up a bit... I hit the cross hair and it begins; the mess is still there. I grab the device, and put it back in it's box... I give up.
I pulled the old vacuum out of the closet and vacuumed the room... I guess I still have a job.
