Impractical preparedness
Handbook to Practical Disaster Preparedness arrived today and I opened it to Chapter Three, Food storage. The recommendations were ridiculous. He says store frozen food, milk, uncooked rice and beans. In an emergency there would be no electricity, it would be impossible to cook. All frozen food would be quickly spoiled. I went through Hurricane Ike, we had no running water for two and a half weeks, no electricity for four weeks in Houston where I live. There was no electicity for buying gas, no ATM, no stores or restaurants open for at least two and a half weeks and some didn't open for a month. Roads were impassable from thousands of huge downed trees, electric lines were down as we have above ground utilities; roofs were crushed by trees and ripped off by wind. Police and fire departments were not able to answer calls. Later the book advises to put dry ice in the refrigerator and freezer. And where are you going to get dry ice??? What use is the grain he recommends? You can't cook it. And fresh fruit and vegetables for a "more balanced diet." how long will those last? A couple of days! He recommends "milk, cheese, yogurt, pudding and ice cream." Oh, please! The book is mostly just filler, things he read and imcorporated in this book. Going on about dietary requirements, heart disease, protein, fats, sugars. "Even in the worst of times, it is hard to imagine not getting enough fat in our diets." I can tell you that when you are wondering where your next meal is coming from you really don't give a damn about a balanced meal or care to know that he says soy sauce unopened wil last for three years. I didn't bother to read any more of the book. People who gave this book a high rating have never lived through a disaster.
