A Very Simplistic View of the World
I don't agree with Ron Paul on a lot of things, but I do agree with him on a few things. The problem with Ron Paul however, is that he is able to recognize many problems that other politicians ignore; but his solutions to those problems are reckless and would only do more harm. The Government has been printing money at an alarming rate, lately, to pay for the extremely wrong Iraq War, but a return to the gold standard would be completely disastrous as it would create massive deflation which is actually much worse than the slow inflation that we have now.
I first became really intrigued by Ron Paul by reading his "War on Christmas" speech. In that speech he claimed that the Constitution is "replete with references to God". Now, anyone who has ever read the Constitution would know that there are absolutely zero references to God in the Constitution. It made me realize that this man, who constantly speaks of the Constitution, is actually using it to push his far right-wing agenda. Such as his "Sanctity of Life Act", which would define life at conception and essentially be a de-facto ban on abortion; as any state that has murder as a crime would be forced to treat abortion as murder.
This book is no different than what he has been peddling for the past 20 years. However, the reason I am giving this book one star other than the fact that his solutions are dangerous, is the fact that I believe he is doing something unethical by using his Presidential candidacy to sell books. Long after it was clear that he was done, he continued to solicit donations and use those donations to promote his book. It reminds me of his "do as I say not as I do" stance on earmarks. Where he inserts millions of dollars worth of pork into bills and then votes against them; all the while criticizing others for doing the same thing.
This book will definitely appeal to his supporters. But, to someone reading this unbiased and not knowing who Ron Paul is, will find the book to be nothing more than an overly idealistic and simplistic view on politics and economics. The world is much more complex then "get the government out of this" and "abolish that".
