PRIVACY VIOLATION, poor accuracy and reliability
I really thought this would be a fun, get-healthy purchase. The product out of the box looked quite nice; clean glass on top, low profile, well designed. Bluetooth pairing with an iPhone 5s was a bit of a pain. It took over a half dozen tries before I got the scale successfully paired. The key seems to be that you have to keep holding the button on the back until pairing is completed, not until you get the screen to light up in the trying-to-pair configuration like you would expect. Initial weigh-in and sync was also not intuitive and took several tries, even for someone who is fairly tech-savvy. Reliability on this scale isn't really great for a digital device. I set it on a flat, hardwood floor and did repeated weigh-ins without changing anything. About a third of the weigh-ins failed to sync properly to the phone. Of those that did manage to sync, the variability range was a full five pounds. Seriously, with me doing my best to stand flat and still, the app showed that I'd gained 5 pounds in a minute. At +-2 lbs accuracy, measuring to the nearest tenth of a pound is a significant-figures fail. The biggest FAIL, though, is the PRIVACY VIOLATION. This scale and the bluetooth connectivity REQUIRE each user to set up an account with Weight Gurus where they can keep your name, your weight records, your email, your zip code, etc. All fields are required; none are left optional. When will companies learn that we don't want our devices telling everyone in their home office our personal business? The additional downside, of course, is that if WeightGurus goes out of business your scale likely goes bust because it needs the online account. Weight data should be backed up locally to iTunes, or at least remote accounts and backup should be strictly optional. At present there is no Apple HealthKit connectivity, which is also a downside. So, sadly, this device gets a reject and return from me. There's no reason why my scale needs my name, email, and zip code. I wish Apple could block all connectivity for select apps. EDITED TO ADD: It's very interesting to me that a number of the 5-star reviews are from people who are all reviewing the same product lines and give almost nothing but 5-star reviews. One of them apparently purchased 4 different 5-star bathroom scales in the space of a month. I refuse to support a company that even appears to be paying for faked online reviews. That's way too unethical for me. Buyer beware!
