Spacing is bad, the bar slides too easily, screws not accessible to tighten
We wanted a bar exactly this this for our smallish laundry room to retract and collapse out of the way when we didn’t need it. The minimalist design and additional bar to expand the capacity when needed gave it the extra edge to make us select this particular one. I was excited to put it up but quickly realized the issues.
While each individual bracket may be fine, it still would suffer from one of the three problems I found. The other two issues are a result of the “kit” with two brackets and the expansion bar.
I’ll address the title of my review item by item.
1) Spacing is bad - again, the kit comes with two brackets and a bar to span between them. Sadly, the span is 30.5 inches between them. A typical US house is built with 16 inches on-center wall studs making the proper spacing to mount in studs 32 inches. While the kit comes with the little plastic anchors, we all know those are going to be pulled out of the wall in time and leave huge, sad holes that we then have to fill, sand, paint and repeat when we have to remount the thing. Another inch and a half on the bar would have allowed the brackets to be mounted directly into the wall studs. I chose to do it this way anyway, trying to clip as much of the stud as I could while maximizing the distance needed... and the bar does have enough slack to allow for that gap, but it’s just bad design.
2) The bar slides too easily - the bar that comes with the kit slots into the piece where a single bracket would hold hangers. Unfortunately it slides so easily forwards and backwards that it moves at the slightest touch sending it into the wall with your empty hangers banging into the wall.
3) screws not accessible to tighten - using the template to mount the bracket was handy - until you realize you can’t get to the screws to tighten them once you slide the bracket on and lock it into place. You have to tighten the screws randomly and slide the bracket over them. When you get it to the proper tightness, you end up slicing and scratching your wall to clamp it into place so it doesn’t wobble once hung. The top screw is completely inaccessible. There there is a slight gap in the bottom screw, but you have to have a super skinny screwdriver to get to it. Don’t try a driver bit because it doesn’t fit.
I suppose overall I’ll accept the product, but just a little more attention to detail would have made it much better.
