★★☆☆☆
Undercooked
The 4K picture is nice and the apps are as good as one would expect (well, mostly), but that is not really why one would pay $600+ extra for The Frame (compared to same size Samsung 4k QLED TV). One is paying extra either for the slim mount (I am sure there are some design nuts out there), or for the "Art mode". Well, paid for the art mode, because I think that a black rectangle on the wall is NOT the way of the future.
So far I am sorely disappointed. Whoever decided to allow us mortals to use our own content never tried doing it himself.
Specific shortcomings:
1. Observe the pics attached. First three are of the same photo shot in portrait layout (gasp!). When shown in a list of content on an attached USB drive, the image is chopped down to fit a landscape-sized slot. Not perfect, but...ok. But if you look closer you will see some severe pixellation. Really? In this day and age you cannot even resize an image? But wait, it gets "better"!
2. Once I click "preview", the image (#2 attached), is shown full-screen. Except it has been squished to fit the landscape orientation of the TV. Really? You cannot imagine a "virtual mat" that allows for a portrait? And then....
3. I save the image into the TV, but its Art Mode (unlike the preview mode) is incapable of correctly interpreting the metadata within the image, so it is shown SIDEWAYS (see my #3). This is particularly annoying since the preview sw handles it correctly.
4. The automatic adjustment of brightness to match the ambient light (in Art Mode) is Ok. It takes 2-4 seconds for the TV to notice the change (which kinda kills the illusion of a natural painting, but fine, be like that!). What annoys me thoroughly is that when the lights in the oom go completely off, the art brightness does NOT even attempt to follow. Illusion destroyed.
5. It is possible to correctly display non-landscape images by uploading them via SmartThings app. The result is Ok (see pic #4) [ Yeah, I have not bothered with removing all the stickers and masking tape, since with every minute I get a stronger feeling that I might be returning this beast].
6. The collage options in SmartThings app are limited to two - see pic #5. Really not acceptable for uses outside of art galleries. I would expect at least a dozen of layouts, letting me mix and match at least a dozen items.
7. And if you hoped to have video content in ArtMode (a window to your favorite beach, perhaps?) - forget it. Video is not supported in Art Mode.
8. You can play your videos by selecting Source -> Mass Storage, you can even loop them. But that mode has its own issues. For starters, it completely ignores the input from the ambient light sensor.
9. What is really annoying is that while the thumbnails of your vacation photos and videos are shown all together, once you go into presentation mode, you will be looping either through photos only, or through videos only (whatever the first item in your show was). Really? Anybody knows a person who shoots stills till noon and then religiously switches to movies?
Bottom line: unless in the next five days find an app in Samsung store that makes this Tv behave like was driven to expect, it is going back. Nice folks at Best Buy told me that a software upgrade is coming "soon" but could not tell me anything specific about the improvements, so I am not holding my breath. No for this price..
