As a third grade teacher, I was excited about offering this book to my students for a book club. I ordered one to read for myself first and I’m glad I did because it seems very advanced for a third grader. There are comments on the back cover from 8 year olds talking about how great the book is. But I truly don’t see how an 8 year would get into this book unless their teacher or parent was reading it to them. I gave the book to my highest level reader- she is 8 and reads at a 5th grade level - and she found it to be “kinda boring and I don’t know what they’re really talking about.” So, I’d recommend reading several excerpts before purchasing for your 8/9 year olds.
