Robot Vacuum Nightmare Scenarios Realized
We've had this roomba for about 9 months now and, while it's done a remarkable job in a few places, especially picking up our dog's hair, it's done a lot of things poorly and perhaps a few things so terribly I wish I could go back and not have the roomba. So, to keep it brief, here's a quick overview of the things that we ran into over the preceding 9 months: 1. This roomba will never make it over the slight bump from our flat kitchen floors to the carpet. The moment it enters the kitchen area it will never ever return to the carpeted area. Having a dock is worthless. Having the lighthouses doesn't help at all, the roomba still slips into the kitchen area and is lost to us until it dies. 2. Despite our best efforts, the roomba fails to get under and around our dining table. The only solution is to remove the table completely from the room or just let the roomba do it's thing around that area (when it's not stuck between a chair's legs) and then come back through and clean up later. 3. The roomba is incapable of negotiating an area that might have two parallel, long spaces that can be entered and exited from two different, far-away, spots. This has meant that the roomba is unable to clean half our house automatically. Having a fancy scheduling system doesn't add any value. 4. After 9 months, the roomba is exhibiting incredible symptoms of failure. It rarely can move along the carpet in a straight line despite every effort to clean and maintain the thing. Very low maintenance feels like almost a lie. And the device makes loud cla-clunk noises as it moves around cleaning. And here's the thing that gives me nightmares: One crazy night shortly after a vacation our Roomba had once again forgotten it's scheduling. Well, it'd actually lost track of time and the schedule still was going to happen no matter what. So, that evening we opt for a comfy dinner. The puppy is left to guard the house. And all's well. That is, until, the roomba kicked on at an actually unpredictable time and rapidly cornered our puppy who's scared of the monster vacuum already. Unfortunately, the roomba didn't let up and after the guy was cornered, he finally lost it and peed. Then, out of the goodness of Roomba's heart, it moved that puddle of pee all over our apartment. Professional cleaners had to come in to repair the damage. So, yeah, great robot vacuum, I guess. For the price I paid, I think I might have been a lot better off just hiring a maid. And heck, the thing is already falling apart, 9 months into it's supposed very maintenance free life. I don't think so.
