★★☆☆☆
Who's the audience here?
The simplistic language and love-at-first-sight romance made this feel like a young adult novel... But then there was a looooooong sex scene and the book opened with the protagonist's finger being chopped off. I liked the premise, but there were just too many things that bothered me: * Book opens with protagonist getting her finger chopped off, then wandering the streets for a while. Apparently, blood loss and infection don't happen in this world. Also, this didn't seem to move the plot forward in any way - it felt like a pointless scene that was just there to shock. * Almost at the end, the characters need to go on a quest to retrieve an item. This felt very shoehorned into the plot, and the whole quest was very rushed. I really wish this was taken out, or done better. * The "romance" was pretty much "horny teenager girl rescues broken boy". As it was written, felt simple and cliche. * This was a fantasy world, but there were a bunch of modern concepts sprinkled throughout that were very out-of-place. One of the character wears a tux? People understand allergies, their causes, and their medications? A character plays a violin (violins happened in the 16th century) as opposed to a fiddle? I'll skip the rest of the series.
