False Advertising: This feeder is not "Squirrel Proof"......read more....
First let me say, before submitting this review I called the manufacturer, Brome Bird Care, to let them know my issue & to give them the benefit of the doubt. I was told to expect a call back from either Jodi or Maureen. That was one week ago. No one has called me back.
My issue: the feeder is "guaranteed squirrel proof". This guarantee is attributed to the shroud closing feature which is activated by a squirrel's weight. When a squirrel (or any heavy animal or bird) climbs on the feeder its weight forces the shroud down thus closing access to the feeder ports. This feature works fine. The problem is: when the squirrel first makes contact with the feeder it shakes and bird food falls out of the feeder ports & is scattered all over the ground. The squirrels then jump to the ground and eat all the seeds. When they have eaten everything they simply repeat the process. They are very smart and get very proficient at the process. This does 3 things: 1. it make a terrible mess on my deck; 2. the squirrels have completely chased the birds away & are at the feeder continuously, all day long; 3. the squirrels can consume the food in the feeder 10x faster than the birds.
There are 2 potential solutions to the problem: 1. locate the feeder in a way that would prevent the squirrels from jumping on it. In my case I would involve getting an extension ladder to hang the feeder from a high, protected eave. However, I would need that same ladder every time I needed to replenish the bird food. Not a realistic solution, or; 2. the feeder would need to be anchored down in such a way as prevent the squirrels from being able to move/shake it when they jump on it. Since I want the feeder located on my deck there is no reasonable way to do this that does not involve additional expense, assuming it can be done at all.
All that said, I am very disappointed. I thought I had found a solution to my squirrel problem. Sadly, I have not. I am submitting these comments so that others can be fore-warned. Be sure you understand the limitations with this feeder before purchasing. If you think it will work for you - buy it. Worst case -- if it does not work out you can always return it to Amazon for a full refund. Note: save the box.
