Really need to understand the physics of the install...
Ok, first off, I really do like this product. However, that said, there are some significant safety concerns.
The way it attaches to the door frame really puts all of the stress on the door jamb and the molding. Now, if you are in the average home, the door jamb is at best tacked on, and at worst glued on. That means when you are tightening the vice grips it will simply pull the jamb off.
The way the top bar attaches, it is relying on the strength of the molding from coming lose. The little metal bracket is woefully inadequate, and will serve more as a lever to pry the molding off, more than anything else.
The vice grips themselves don't grip the entirety of the doorframe. It could if the lips were significantly deeper than they are, but they aren't. These are really simple design flaws that any engineer worth their salt could figure out.
In the end, I had to strengthen the door jamb with some cleverly placed screws right where the vice grips attached, as well as strengthen the molding at the top with some more screws. Without these additions, there is no way it would have held up to the rigors of children. With those additions, it could easily now handle any adult. I would much rather have some screw in security devices to secure the whole thing and be a little more inconvenienced with the lack of portability, than the fundamental weaknesses in the current design.
I'm keeping it, and am currently happy with it, but only because I could easily modify things to suit my safety requirements. With some extremely simple nd virtually no cost upgrades, this device would easily surpass even my safety reqs.
So please, buyers, really visually inspect everything, do not take anything for granted, and test the thing out yourself with another adult watching to ensure there is no movement in the final installation, as that will lead to a catastrophic failure!
