SPOILER ALERT
This is a very difficult book for me to review. There were parts of it that I really enjoyed, and I am interested in finding out a little more about Lewis Carroll. I know that there are many that suggest that he may have been a pedophile and this book seemed to focus on that. What ended up bothering me the most was in the beginning his friendship with the Liddell girls (he was portrayed as not liking little boys) was most definitely how a predator pedophile would groom his prey. This was VERY difficult to read, my spouse worked many years in the crimes against children department of the local police. This would be exactly how a pedophile goes about gaining trust from young girls and it was sickening. What I found even more disturbing was that Alice was blamed throughout the entire book! Even to the end where as an old woman she herself believed it was all her fault! She was 11 when the relationship ended, it is ludicrous to place the blame for sexual misconduct on a child of that age. So basically whether he was or wasn't in real life isn't the problem, that the author wrote Alice as the cause of it all to me was heartbreaking. I just can't give this book a good rating, although if you want a book to really generate a conversation in a book club I would say this is certainly it.
