★★☆☆☆
Over simplified
I was disappointed in this cookbook. As the title suggests, I was not expecting full traditional Indian recipes. However many of these recipes felt overly simple for a cookbook. They are geared towards someone trying to cook quick easy weeknight meals and felt better suited for a blog, as did the focus on stylistic photos and side stories about the author and her family. The recipes felt overly simplified because they emphasize using canned or frozen ingredients or even boxed mixes - not what I expect from a cookbook. For example it suggests eating most dishes with rice or roti but doesn't provide a recipe for roti, instead it suggests using tortillas. I appreciate options for simplifying recipes based on time and availability of ingredients, but these felt watered down. If you're looking for quick easy meals to try with new flavors this might be the book for you, but if you're looking to improve your cooking or start to tackle Indian dishes you know and love this might not be a good choice.
