Literally Mind-Numbing Brain Surgeon
I purchased this book after watching a fascinating interview of Dr. Jandial on Impact Theory. I was drawn to Dr. Jandial's relatable / easily graspable explanations and theories about brain science. However, I am now half way through the book and am forcing myself to keep at it. Mostly, I am very unimpressed with the chatty, story-telling style of what I was led to believe was more of an actionable self-improvement book as touted. The content is more of a series of glorified gory surgeries packed with industry jargon, uninteresting and unnecessary details including the time of day, what season it was, what year it was, blah blah blah.
Though obviously an adept and articulate surgeon, Dr. Jandial relies HEAVILY on anecdotal evidence and over-dramatized case studies rather than providing much of a tangible basis of brain studies. Interspersed among the endless stories are supposedly busting myths (which most of us have probably never heard of anyway) or instruction or how-to's for brain-hacking your own abilities. The latter is actually where the bulk of my interest lies, but as presented, these mini-chapters are consistently embedded within a story (of course) so they serve more as a distraction than the intended content.
Although occasionally informative, most of the book feels like a stage for Dr. Jandial's self-congratulatory surgeries, while he seems disturbingly distant from the actual magnitude of the situation each of his patients faces. The stories are that of a dark mind that is captivated by the power and control he holds over the patients even more so than their hopeful recovery.
Honestly at half way through, I can't imagine anything being of further value in the second half of the book and I feel grossly misled into buying it as a way to fine-tune my own "neuro-fitness." I would only recommend this book if you like gory movies, lack of empathy, and lots of neurological jargon.
