Contains almost THREE times the amount of sugar listed on the label!!
Updated: I finally heard back from Gerbs. They informed me that their chocolate chips do NOT contain 5 grams of sugar per 28 grams of chocolate chips. They contain 13.5 grams of sugar per 28 grams...almost three times the amount on the label. These chocolate chips are almost 50% sugar...about average or worse than typical store bought semi-sweet chocolate chips in terms of sugar content Original Review: I purchased these chocolate chips because the nutrition label claims to have 5 grams of sugar per serving, which is less sugar than most other chocolate chips. I believe the nutrition label is wrong. It states that it has 0g added sugar, yet the first ingredient is sugar. So, that's clearly wrong (which Gerbs admitted to in their response to one of the questions, yet they haven't corrected the label). But I believe this chocolate contains more than 5 grams of sugar per 28 grams of chocolate chips. These taste sweeter to me than other chocolate chips that have about 12 grams of sugar per 28 grams of chocolate. There are only three ingredients for gerbs: sugar, chocolate, and cocoa butter. Sugar is listed first which means it's the most predominant ingredient. With only 3 ingredients, mathematically it has to contain at least over 9.33 grams of sugar per 28 grams (over 1/3). Unless I don't understand how nutrition labels work, the label must be wrong. I emailed the company several times to try to find out how much sugar is actually in these chocolate chips. They have not responded, which is very disappointing. I will not be purchasing these chocolate chips again. If you are purchasing these for the low sugar content, don't bother. They taste good, but they probably don't have any less sugar than your average chocolate chips. Very disappointing when a company can't provide accurate information for consumers. FDA regulations are in place for a reason. Consumers have a right to know what they are consuming. When a company can't accurately list information on their label and can't respond to requests for information, they won't be getting my business.
