Shockingly poor design.
The kids (5 and 6) like this game a lot - it is a good educational game that stresses logic and problem solving. However, if I had it to do over again, I'd just buy the regular mastermind game with the insertable pegs. The problem with this game is that you just place the pieces in a depressed circle on the board (for the code, the guesses, and the scoring pegs) and so they topple at the slightest move of the board or if you brush them with your hand. It is hard even for adults to manipulate the pegs into the right places without knocking them over - and even harder for kids who are still developing fine motor skills. Also you have to remove the tray (with the scoring pegs inside) and snap it back in place every time you make a new code - so the potential for the little pegs to go flying out when you snap it or for the code pegs to fall over is huge. I'd suggest to just get the standard mastermind game and use modified play (with only 3 slots) with your kids. It will be far less frustrating. Honestly, if your goal was to make a kid friendly mastermind game, I have no idea how you would come up with this design. I can't imagine it was actually really tested with kids. Or anyone for that matter.
