★★☆☆☆
Sim City Lite
I know a lot of people out there are giving this game a bad review because they are whining about the DRM or Orign but that is not the case with this review. To start I have always been a Sim City fan and have been looking forward to this game for years but in the end I am just disappointed. Pros: The simulation is accurate since it now works on a per-person basis Graphics are top notch Online play is nice, I actually like the idea of multilayer for trading with friend's cities. (For this I was willing to overlook the DRM and always online parts of the game.) Information overlays are very awesome! Modular building designs are amazing I've wanted that for so long! Curved Roads! Cons: No ability to unload and reload save games in single player. Maps are too small! I can't emphasize this enough. The 2km x 2km map size is ridiculous how are you supposed to build a real city in an area smaller than any major cities core downtown!?! (Don't believe me Chicago's Core downtown, Loop + Gold Coast/River East, is over 2km^2 easily and don't get me started on New York or God forbid a less dense city like Los Angeles or Huston.) No overtime graphs for money/services. Tax System is to fluid. i.e. say you have a medium sized company in your town and it decides to build a bigger factory. While the old factory is being ripped down and the new one is being built your income drops. Can't edit my region connections. (I understand that this is probably a technical limitation but the amount of green space between regions is ridiculous!) Mass Transit is lacking: There are no subway's or elevated trains. Though I guess they aren't really needed since 2km is way to small to warrant such an expensive transit Overview: All in all, I want to like this game I really do and I would have thought this game was decent if I had never played another city builder in my lifetime. But that is just not the case. Having played all the previous version's of Sim City and Cities XL I have to say this game was disappointing. The small map sizes are truly limiting. I understand that EA was probably faced with a really hard choice once they went to a per-person real-time simulation. This game would probably bring most mainstream computers to a crawl if the map sizes were too big but why not include it as an option with a big warning? There may only be 1% of PC Gamers out there with a 6 Core Intel i7 out there in the real world but the people who have them thought that maybe game companies might make a game that would use the raw power some time... The continued dumbing down of video games is a disappointment. Oh well I guess I'll go back to playing Cities XL wishing it's simulation was anything close to as good as Sim Cities. Now if only EA took returns...
