First "Verified Purchase" Hovertrax Review
I ordered a Hovertrax Dec 12, 2015, Got it on the 17th, had it boxed back up to ship back to Amazon the next morning. The unit came with mismatched wheels. The tread on one wheel had diagonal lines, the other wheel had a curved-line tread, and the alpha-prefixes on the wheel motor serial #'s didn't match. I ordered red, what I got was a dull-burgundy color. The "Razor" brand emblem could be peeled off easier than a piece of low-quality masking tape. At the time of this writing, the Hovertrax manual contradicted itself on pages 6 and 7 regarding how to turn, and contradicted itself 3 times on page 5 regarding battery charging without discerning why. Razor has since made changes to the manual PDF on their website. Hopefully they've changed the hard copies that get shipped with the units too. With all the "Exploding Hoverboard Battery/Fire" news in the press lately, I figured I'd better call customer support for battery charging clarification, when I did, I got someone outside the US., it was obvious her primary language was not English, and she was of no help. With Hovertrax you get; -A big Brand Name (that gets their boards from China just like everybody else) -A Razor emblem (that'll get rubbed off with the slightest abrasion) -To pay another $100-$300 over many competitors -No LED directional lights -Outsourced customer phone support -A 90-day warranty (vs. the 1-year warranty provided with the Leray, Powerboard, Swagway, etc. brands) When I applied pressure to the foot platform of the Hovertrax, the board started shaking violently. I'd already lost so much confidence in the product (mismatched wheels, poorly written manual, outsourced phone support) that I decided to just ship it back. I've got another board (Powderboard Brand) and I'm happy with it so far. Will the Powerboard be better than a Razor brand board in the long run? Only time will tell. In that time, maybe Razor can tighten up their product manual and their QC with China, and back-up their product with a better warranty. To Razor's credit, the Hovertrax charger is beefier, and boasts a UL logo, my Powerboard charger is significantly lighter and doesn't have the UL logo (I've always charged and stored my boards on an unused fireplace hearth, away from anything flammable). My advice; Regardless what brand you buy, buy it here on Amazon, making sure the product description reads "Shipped By Amazon". If it's fulfilled by Amazon, and winds up being defective within 30 days, you can likely ship it right back to Amazon for a refund. If you buy it shipped directly from the vendor, you'll most likely be faced with a "No Returns or Refunds" policy right from day one, and you'll get to play Herky-Jerky with the vendor's warranty department if there's a problem with the board. Also, I'd suggest you consider the "Square Trade" extended warranty offered by Amazon. I usually avoid extended warranties, but considering the cost of the board, and the product origin, I believe the Square Trade warranty is a good buy. Wear a helmet and spend the $30-$40 for knee, elbow, and wrist guards... much cheaper than an ER visit and the down-time due to broken bones.
